He did not realize, she thought, how rare a thing that was. He had argued and engaged and when he disagreed with her he always presented a cogent and coherent point of view. There’d been desire in his eyes when he’d first looked at her, but unlike most men he had listened when she spoke. Her friend – perhaps her only friend, for Wekesa would always love Amadeus more than her – had a brilliant mind, she’d known that since the beginning. He was of the opinion that Tasia’s head should be on a pike above the gates of Ater, and had not been shy of informing the High Lady of that same opinion. Already she’d had some very pointed conversations with Maddie on the subject. In exchange Tasia had been confirmed as High Lady of Wolof, her lands and privilege left untouched even if she had been one of the most vocal supporters of the would-be Dread Emperor Baleful. The public act of submission had lent Alaya the legitimacy she had desperately needed, allowed her to bring minor nobility in line without needing to use swords or gold for it. Enough coin to pay for the campaign Amadeus had waged in her name and more, surrender of artefacts and ancient magical texts – and most importantly, the giving of an oath of fealty at the Tower. Neither of the women had trusted the other not to make an assassination attempt through a direct scrying link given the skill of the mages they had at their disposal.Īlaya had extracted concessions and not minor ones. Terms had been agreed on before the walls of Aksum were ever breached, negotiated through intermediaries in person as they gave instructions to their representatives through scrying links. She had been correct in this: Wekesa had buried his old teacher under the weight of his scorn and walked out of the burning wasteland the undisputed bearer of that Name. ![]() The High Lady Tasia Sahelian had offered her surrender before the Siege of Aksum began, anticipating a defeat there even with the Warlock taking the field to support the Chancellor’s claim. There would be three attempts on her life.Īlaya understood this instinctively, even as she rode through the gates of Wolof. “Authority is the lie we all agree on for fear of chaos.” ![]()

By the end of that first year there were nine Piggly Wiggly locations around Memphis. Shoppers on that first day did see some employees stocking shelves, Freeman writes, “but they politely refused to select merchandise for visitors.” Just like today, a shopper picked up a basket (though Piggly Wiggly’s were made of wood, not plastic) and went through the store to purchase everything. Saunders’s model cut costs by cutting out the clerks. Even chain stores used clerks.Īlthough the chain store model helped keep costs down, the University of Michigan Library writes, the “small army of clerks” necessary to fill orders were expensive, the university writes, and at least part of that cost was passed on to the consumer. Before Piggly Wiggly, groceries were sold at stores where a clerk would assemble your order for you, weighing out dry goods from large barrels. This enthusiastic greeting was necessary because Saunders was trying something completely new. A brass band serenaded the visitors in the lobby.” “Newspaper reporters posing as contest judges awarded five and ten dollar gold coins to every woman, while the supply lasted. “At the door Saunders shook their hands and gave to their children flowers and balloons,” Freeman writes. For the store’s opening ceremonies, writes Mike Freeman for the Tennessee Historical Quarterly, Saunders promised to hold a “beauty contest” that he advertised in local newspapers. But its founder Clarence Saunders was clearly onto something-today, self-service grocery stores are the norm. Its founding is one of the stranger stories in the history of retail. Today, the chain has more than 530 stores across 17 states, according to its website. On this day in 1916, the first Piggly Wiggly opened in Memphis, Tennessee. The one question is why their innovator named the first one Piggly Wiggly. Self-serve grocery stores saved shoppers money and made financial sense. ![]() ![]() ![]() Now, place the paper model down and fold the right edge towards the center and make a crease as shown in pic 16.ġ7. In another blog post here at Origami Spirit, I feature an origami sunflower of my own design based on the pipe-cleaner flower. She shows how to make the flowers with different kinds of paper currency. In her book Money Gami*, Gay Merrill Gross has featured some lovely versions of this flower under the name of “Mediterranean Daisy”. The caption reads: This design was folded by a barman in Cyprus! Diagrams by David Brill, 2000. Yet another version of this model –made with cigarette foil paper, is found on the British Origami Society website. He also shows another unit, added below the flower, to make two leaves. In this book Guido shows the petal units folded from three squares of paper, and the stem made from a twisted strip of the same paper. The flower from cigarette paper appeared in 1986 in the Italian book Fiori in Origami, by Guido Gazzera and identified by the name Margherita (Daisy). It is listed as a Modular Flower (Neo-Traditional) with diagrams by Mark Kennedy. The idea of using a pipe cleaner was most-likely implemented by Becky Berman, an art teacher.ĭiagrams for the version shown here appeared in the OrigamiUSA 1991 Annual Collection. Subsequently, the flower was made with rectangular pieces of paper and tied with a pipe-cleaner. In a meeting at Lillian Oppenheimer’s Origami Center in New York City in 1979, Gay taught the flower to several people. The three squares were used for the petals and the strip was twisted around the petals to hold them together and form a stem. That model was made with three squares and a long strip cut from the silver paper that lined cigarette packs. Gay Merrill Gross, a well-known author of origami books, learned a version of this flower in Israel, in 1976. The exact origin of this flower is not known, but according to several sources, it might have Mediterranean roots. Additionally, you’ll learn how to embellish the flower and pick up a few tricks on coloring various papers for striking results. The following video demonstrates how to make this model. It is informally known as the ”Pipe-cleaner Flower” and can be completed in the blink of an eye. ![]() This six-petal flower is made with three rectangular units tied together with a piece of wire or pipe cleaner. In other words, it’s highly subjective. – Is focused more on memories and feelings than factsĪ memoir gives the reader an inside look into the character’s psyche. They are more personal than autobiographies. They tend to be exploratory, self-revealing, and conversational. Memoirs are characterized by a free and personal style, with little structure or organization. You can even write it in the third person. It doesn’t always need to be written in the first person. – Can be informal, unlike autobiographies Memoirs are also a great way to connect with your audience. And you can write about topics that are meaningful to you and your readers. You can tell the world what you know about yourself. You can tell your story in your own words. What’s so special about a memoir? Writing a memoir is the ultimate form of self-expression. Memoirists use their experiences to create a creative and interesting story. For example, Trina Schart Hyman’s illustrated memoir, No One Ever Told Us That, is told in a non-linear manner.Īuthors write memoirs so that they can be shared and appreciated, so they should not be dry and lifeless. That being said, memoirs are not bound to strict rules around factual accuracy or chronology. Memoirists often play with their memories to tell a good story. While autobiographies emphasize facts, memoirs, on the other hand, focus on the writer’s emotional truth. You can write about your childhood, a significant moment in your life, or any time period that has shaped who you are today. The genre of memoirs includes a wide range of topics. It has wide appeal because it allows authors to use their life experiences to help or inspire others. Memoir, which is the French for “memory” or “reminisce,” is personal and more intimate than an autobiography. Whether you want to write a memoir or an autobiography, there are some crucial differences between the two. The question now is: Should you write a memoir or an autobiography? Memoir vs. Having your own published book will allow you to instantly boost your credibility, establish your reputation in your field, market your business, and more importantly-make a valuable contribution to people’s lives. Memoirs and autobiographies are great ways to share your story with the world if you have considered writing down your past and preserving it for yourself, friends, family, future generations, and possibly general readership. And that will be so much easier to do if you write a book. If you are going to get others interested in what you are saying, you will have to get their attention by telling your own story. And no matter how you look at it, the way you define yourself and who you want to be is a product of what you have learned, who you surround yourself with, and the circumstances of your life. Your unique experiences have shaped your life. ![]() Yours are likely different from those around you. Why not you? And do you write a memoir or an autobiography? That’s the question! But they are joined in their anger by many thousands of men, who want to force change to ensure the rights of all Iranians are respected – regardless of gender, religion or ethnicity. Iranian women have been at the forefront of the current protests, and the cry “women, life, freedom” expresses the deep yearning that women across the country share in the face of the regime’s oppression. So it’s no coincidence that the Iranian government has never ratified the 1979 Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), which ensures full equality for women in all areas of their lives. ![]() This goal was achieved in part by restricting women’s role in social, cultural and political life. The constitution also emphasises the need to protect and promote women’s “momentous and precious function of motherhood” – the family is a “fundamental unit of society and the main centre for the growth and edification of human beings”. The situation is much worse when it comes to the rights of women in Iran, which are supposedly protected under Article 20 of the constitution, which states: “All citizens of the country, both men and women, equally enjoy the protection of the law and enjoy all human, political, economic, social and cultural rights in conformity with Islamic criteria.” Crucial to the regime’s survival has been the support of the security forces, who take their orders from the Supreme Council for National Security (SCNS) – chaired by the president and including representatives who take their orders from the supreme leader, Ali Khamenei. ![]() The Islamic Republic has been relying on national security in a broad sense to suppress peaceful dissent, unlawfully using violence – including against women and children – for the sake of its own survival, rather than the safety of the country. Yet Article 176, which concerns national security, refers to a violent threat to the nation rather than peaceful protest. ![]() The Islamic Republic often justifies its brutality and human rights violations by referring to the constitutional exceptions for behaviour detrimental to the fundamental principles of Islam or for actions likely to undermine national security. Mohammad Ghobadlou, 22, has reportedly been sentenced to death for hitting and killing a police officer with his car during the protests, but this has not been confirmed. It has been reported that more than 1,000 people have been charged with a variety of offences in the Tehran province for involvement in the protests. He added that the “unabated violent response of security forces” in the country has led to the reported deaths of at least 277 people. Thousands of people were interrogated, unfairly prosecuted and/or arbitrarily detained solely for peacefully exercising their human rights, and hundreds remained unjustly imprisoned.Īccording to the UN’s special rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders in Iran, Javaid Rehman, more than 14,000 men, women and children have been arrested in Iran during the current protests. And, in violation of its free speech obligations under Article 19(2) of the ICCPR, it frequently violates the right to freedom of expression by restricting access to information, including banning social media platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and Telegram, and shutting down the internet in times of peaceful protests. Yet it has frequently restricted the right to peaceful protest, using sometimes lethal force against and torturing peaceful protesters. Iran is a signatory to various international treaties, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). But in practice things are very different: non-accountability and abuse of power have become normalised during the Islamic Republic’s 43 years in power. From this notion of democracy should flow respect for human rights, freedom of expression, access to power, the rule of law, separation of powers, independence of the judiciary, and transparency and accountability of the government. The preamble to Iran’s constitution provides that “the constitution strives to hand over the destiny of people to themselves”. ![]() ![]() ![]() Long QT: While this is not an arrhythmia, it can predispose someone to have one. This is a medical emergency that must be treated with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation (delivery of an energy shock to your heart muscle to restore a normal rhythm) as soon as possible.
